hard shell space helmet

Post by wetcircuit » Sat Aug 22, 2015 5:46 pm

Hi all. Since I am sort of responsible for the existence this Game Engine forum I decided I'd better contribute to it... ;)

I am pretty new to both Game Engines (Unity ~1yr) and MD (~3mos) so I am not claiming to be any kind of pro.... I am the personality type when I am learning anything new I try to "do it wrong" just to see, so naturally I used a fabric simulator to try to make something very un-fabric-like: a hard shell space helmet....

Didn't really have a plan when this started.... And after building a few versions and testing them in Unity, I decided to go back and add an inner lining to the helmet which I'm not sure was a good idea or well executed....

Normally for a game engine you want to have low polygon count (especially for games that run on a mobile device phone/tablet), but to be honest I think I have gone overboard with the low-poly here. If you watch the video I am getting very smooth realtime movement, so I don't think it needs to be this low.... Anyway it was a learning project, and I could always export another version with denser settings.

The spacesuit is also an MD project, inspired by "Bibendum" the Michelin Man character.

Yeah, spacesuits!
Fun fun and looks cool too!
I think it is neat that the helmet looks like an old style flight helmet but with a face visor...

I always like seeing where people go with spacesuits (even if my own in the WIP-gallery is a bit over the top). I really like the work that Dava Newman is doing at MIT... ANYTHING to get away from the present day space suit design!

Are you going to add air hoses and/or a backback to the character?

Very nice. I really like your suit design. I've been watching Unity videos on CG Cookie, but I still don't grasp the whole process. Hopefully, I'll get there eventually. Thank you for sharing.
