Faking bows/ties/knots?

I am wondering if anyone has any tips for making bows, neck ties, straps, lacing, etc. Anything with a knot, especially if it's a thin one. I have seen tutorials of people slowly tying knots using pinning. I have tried this approach, but even with very low vertex density, i can't get good results. The knots bug out or clip and fall apart, and certainly don't hold up when animating.

To get more stability, I am happy to fake them and use sewing to keep them together. But that changes the pattern dramatically, and I don't know how to get them to look right.

MD is not capable of real tying of any sort. If you pull it taunt, the fabrics will pass through each other. You have to fake it with multiple pieces, pinning, freezing or anything else you can come up with.

Have you seen the Double Sided Texture post in this Tutorials, Tips & Tricks category by Nicole? She posted a bow that she made and it's very nice. You can look at her screenshot to get an idea of what she did.

Some of the bows you show in the example pics, are simply loops, which can be made without 'tying a knot'. Just place some strategic sewing lines to hold the strips of cloth together.

Otherwise, as Lori says, trying to pull a knot tightly enough to hold in real-life, just makes MD pull the mesh through itself, even at the smallest Particle Distance settings. I have made 'knots' before, and multiple pattern pieces is the easiest way to do it. Here are some you can play with:

Another way to fake such tightly knotted bows, would be to place some internal lines (or section off a pattern piece side into segments) and use the Elastic strength to make it look like a tight knot is there.

If you want to animate them, you will have to be sure that there is NO strain or stress on the 'knot' at all..... Don't use them, for example, to hold a robe closed on an avatar...instead, use some hidden sewing lines to take the movement stress. Let the bows/knots be purely decorative in functionality.

Being able to create bows, ties, and lacing in MD would be nice. Would be a great suggestion to the makers of MD.

I have only been able to create decent bows for items outside of MD in Blender. Here are a couple of tutorials by Haven Ditko that might be of some help.
